About the role
The production manager is a key role in manufacturing and production for Vision RT. You will report into the Operations Director and be responsible for managing the efficiency and effectiveness of the entire production process, ensuring that products are manufactured correctly, on time, and in line with company targets. You will be highly motivated with strong team management and planning skills, be responsible for organizing, and supervising the manufacturing process, ensuring efficient production, maintaining quality standards, managing costs, and driving continuous improvement efforts. In addition to the job specification below, there is a unique opportunity to join our wider project team to deliver on our ‘Made in China’ Project. Experience of manufacturing and assembly in China would be advantageous to the role and contribute to the success of the project and the growth of our overall business in China.

Key Responsibilities will include:

    • Developing production plans and schedules to meet business demands and optimize resources.
    • Collaborate with other departments, such as operations, and quality assurance, to ensure smooth production flow.
    • Work closely with purchasing manager to mitigate potential shortages, potential bottlenecks or challenges and implement contingency plans accordingly.
    • Optimise use of resources, including labour, equipment, and materials, effectively to achieve (and even beat) our production targets.
    • Managing 3 direct reports, including production supervisor, test and repairs team plus 12 indirect in production and stores. 
    • Hiring, training, and evaluating production staff to ensure a skilled and motivated workforce.
    • Setting production goals and objectives for individual team members and providing feedback and coaching for their professional development.
    • Promoting a positive work environment and fostering teamwork and collaboration within the production team.
    • Maintain high product standards and minimize defects or errors.
    • Collaborating with the quality assurance team to address any quality-related issues and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and standards both in UK, China and other international markets.
    • Monitoring production costs and identifying opportunities for cost reduction and process optimization.
    • Developing and implementing strategies to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and increase productivity.
    • Design and deliver regular reports on production performance, including key performance indicators (KPIs), to Operations Director and relevant stakeholders.
    • Providing recommendations and implementing strategies based on data analysis to enhance production processes.

Essential Skills & Experience

    • Bachelor's Degree: in a relevant field such as engineering, manufacturing management, operations management, or a related area providing a solid foundation in management principles, production processes, and business operations.
    • Technical Knowledge: A solid understanding of production processes, manufacturing technologies, and equipment is essential. This includes knowledge of lean manufacturing principles, quality control methods, and production planning and scheduling.
    • Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: must be adept at analyzing complex situations, identifying problems, and developing effective solutions. They should possess critical thinking skills and be able to make timely decisions based on available data and information.
    • Planning and Organization: Effective production management requires excellent planning and organizational skills. Develop production schedules, allocate resources efficiently, and coordinate workflows to meet deadlines and targets.
    • Communication Skills: Strong communication skills are essential for a production manager to effectively interact with team members, other departments, and stakeholders. This includes listening actively, providing clear instructions, delivering feedback, and fostering open communication channels.
    • Team Management: The ability to lead and motivate a diverse production team is crucial. Production managers should be skilled in building and maintaining a collaborative work environment, fostering teamwork, and effectively managing employee performance.
    • Quality Focus: A production manager needs to prioritize quality control and ensure that products meet or exceed customer expectations. They should have a keen eye for detail, implement quality management systems, and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
    • Business Acumen: Understanding the broader business context is important for a production manager. They should have knowledge of financial concepts, cost management principles, and the ability to align production strategies with organisational goals.

Desirable skills & experience

    • Experience in previous medical technology industry.
    • Experience in fostering collaborative relationships with manufacturing partners in China specifically.
    • Sage 200 and Sicon ERP systems experience.
    • Experience in using specific lean management skills such as 5S, Kanban and value stream mapping tools in a previous role.
    • Strong business acumen and analytical skills.
