Sr. Data Scientist
At TomTom, the Orbis team is building a next-generation quarantine system designed to safeguard the quality and reliability of map data. This is a unique opportunity for a self-driven Data Scientist who is excited to take ownership and shape a role with significant responsibility and impact.
As the dedicated Data Scientist within the team, you will play a key role in designing and developing machine learning solutions that monitor and evaluate OpenStreetMap data. Your work will focus on identifying potentially harmful or incorrect edits, detecting suspicious actors, and ensuring the overall quality and integrity of map data. You will scrutinize incoming data streams, perform in-depth data analysis, and translate insights into robust machine learning models.
You will design and build a real-time, stream-based system that evaluates edits as they occur, determining whether changes are valid or require further review. This includes developing machine learning components, configuring pipelines, and connecting your solutions to real-world production systems.
We are looking for someone who is comfortable working independently, eager to take ownership, and motivated to shape both the technical direction and the role itself. Experience with Azure and DevOps practices is highly valued, as you will leverage Azure services to build scalable, reliable solutions.
If you enjoy solving complex data challenges, building machine learning systems from the ground up, and making a direct impact on real-world products, this role offers an exciting opportunity to grow and innovate.
What you'll do
- Design, develop, and implement predictive models, algorithms, and statistical analyses to uncover patterns and trends within structured and unstructured data.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify business challenges and formulate data-driven solutions that drive innovation and optimize performance.
- Conduct comprehensive data analysis, including data cleansing, feature engineering, and model evaluation, to ensure accuracy and reliability of insights.
- Apply advanced machine learning techniques, such as deep learning, natural language processing, and reinforcement learning, to develop state-of-the-art models.
- Work with big data technologies and distributed computing frameworks to process and analyze large-scale datasets efficiently.
- Stay up to date with the latest advancements in data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence, and proactively apply new techniques to enhance existing methodologies.
- Communicate complex technical concepts and insights to both technical and non-technical stakeholders effectively.
- Mentor and provide guidance to junior data scientists, fostering a collaborative and knowledge-sharing environment.
What you'll need
- Bachelor’s/Masters/PHD in Computer science, Mathematics, Statistics, or equivalent field
- 5+ years of experience working as a Data Scientist, ideally at a product-focused software company
- Knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages for analyzing data sets and applying predictive analytics
- Good knowledge of statistics and experiment design
- Strong expertise in programming languages such as Python, (Java recommended) along with experience with relevant libraries and frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn and SQL.
- Solid understanding of deep learning architectures and their applications
- Reporting and dashboarding tools (e.g. PowerBI)
- Experience working with technologies for large-scale data collection and data processing (e.g., Spark, Hadoop, Hive)
- Familiarity with Azure technologies (e.g. Power BI, Databricks)
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to effectively present findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead projects and mentor junior team members, fostering a culture of learning and innovation.
