Group Sustainability is SEB's centre of expertise for sustainability matters. We manage SEB’s sustainability strategy and support integration of sustainability into SEB's strategy, business activities and decision-making by providing specialist knowledge, advice and guidance.

Since SEB was founded in 1856, our focus on customers and long-term relationships has been at the heart of our success. We aim to drive positive change by providing capital to help everyone reach their goals and accelerate progress towards a sustainable tomorrow. As a leading financial services group in northern Europe, we'll help you grow and empower you to take on more responsibility to create a real difference. Welcome to SEB.

About the Role:

We are looking for a Senior Sustainability Specialist/Advisor with deep expertise in environmental and/or social sustainability. You will join the Sustainability Policy and Governance team within Group Sustainability, working across the bank to support the assessment of sustainability risks and impacts and the development and implementation of SEB's sustainability policies and governance framework.

A central part of the role is assessing complex sustainability questions relating to clients, transactions and business activities. You will identify material issues, evaluate available evidence and uncertainties, and provide balanced, well-reasoned recommendations to business teams and decision-making fora.

You will also help SEB understand emerging sustainability issues and their implications for clients, sectors and business activities. This includes developments in regulation, science, technology, market practice and stakeholder expectations, as well as broader environmental and social developments affecting the real economy.

Key Responsibilities

You will:

  • Assess material sustainability issues relating to clients, transactions and business activities, and provide clear recommendations to relevant business, risk and sustainability decision-making fora.
  • Analyse environmental and social risks, impacts, dependencies and uncertainties, drawing on relevant data, research and sector expertise.
  • Provide expert advice on sector-specific sustainability issues and emerging environmental and social developments.
  • Support business and client-facing teams with sustainability expertise relevant to their sectors, clients and transactions.
  • Assess sustainability criteria, targets and commitments against SEB's applicable frameworks and external standards.
  • Monitor developments in regulation, science, technology and market practice, translating them into practical implications, guidance and ways of working for SEB.
  • Develop guidance, tools, briefings and training materials that strengthen sustainability knowledge across the organisation.

The role involves close collaboration across Group Sustainability, business divisions, and relevant risk, credit and reporting functions, and includes engagement with clients on sustainability matters.

To thrive in this role we believe:

  • You are an experienced sustainability professional who combines subject-matter expertise with strong analytical judgement.
  • You are comfortable navigating complex questions where evidence may be incomplete, perspectives differ and there is not always a single clear answer.
  • You can distinguish material issues from secondary ones, translate technical sustainability topics into practical business implications, and communicate your reasoning and recommendations clearly. You enjoy working across disciplines and engaging constructively with colleagues who bring different professional perspectives.
  • You have significant professional experience in sustainability, environmental or social assessment, corporate sustainability, environmental management, human rights, climate, biodiversity or related fields.
  • You have substantial hands-on experience of addressing material environmental and/or social sustainability issues within industries relevant to SEB’s corporate client portfolio.
  • You have strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess complex sustainability issues and translate findings into clear, practical recommendations.
  • You have ability to critically assess and use ESG data, methodologies and models.
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • You have a relevant academic degree and demonstrated professional experience.

Experience from financial services or sustainable finance is an advantage, but not a requirement.

What we offer:

This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of sustainability, business and decision-making. You will engage with a wide range of sectors, clients and sustainability challenges, collaborate across the bank and contribute to complex matters that are strategically important to SEB and its clients.

SEB is committed to fostering an inclusive and value-driven culture where employees feel valued, respected and involved.
