Reporting to IRAP’s Executive Vice President, External Relations and Chief of Staff, the Vice President (VP), Development will be an integral member of the IRAP team, and involved in the organization’s overall strategic development. They will oversee and manage the organization’s fundraising strategy, development, and execution, and will build key infrastructure and contacts to strengthen and sustain its activities. In partnership with the Executive Vice President, External Relations and Chief of Staff, the Development team, and other key stakeholders, the VP will be a strategic leader and frontline fundraiser, forging new relationships to increase IRAP’s visibility, achieve ambitious impact, and secure long-term financial resources. They will lead, in partnership, the design and implementation of a comprehensive, clearly-articulated multi-year plan to maintain organizational health in the years to come. The VP will hold a portfolio of principal and major individual and institutional donors, and will be responsible for personal fundraising performance alongside the rest of the development team. 

The VP, Development will have primary responsibility for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow a $30M annual budget through the solicitation of grassroots to major/principal gifts, special events and virtual opportunities, and corporate and foundation support. They will expand and diversify IRAP’s donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the VP will work closely with the Board of Directors on their respective individual fundraising / relationship-building plans, and encourage everyone, through many different avenues, to become more involved in helping the organization reach their fundraising goals.

The VP, Development will directly supervise the highly strategic Development Leadership Team, comprising the Director of Individual Philanthropy, Director of Institutional Philanthropy, and the Development Operations team lead, in addition to overseeing and leading the nine Development team professionals. They will also be a member of the Senior Management Team, responsible for helping to develop a strategic execution plan to achieve organizational results.

Responsibilities

    • Provide strategic vision and direction to build a first-rate development program, in partnership with the Executive Leadership Team, Development team, and Board of Directors, including individual, corporate, and foundation fundraising, and support and ensure stellar development operations.
    • Through a combination of donor, prospect, Board, and staff engagement; intentional pipeline building and authentic stewardship; and creative and innovative fundraising strategies, lead the organization-wide goal of deepening existing and prospective funder relationships, and expanding and diversifying the base of supporters and ambassadors.
    • Maintain a dynamic portfolio of high-net-worth individuals and major institutional funders.
    • Support the Board of Directors, including staffing the Development Committee, as it undertakes greater fundraising and pipeline-building efforts.
    • Ensure dynamic processes in all phases of prospect management, donor qualification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and development reporting.
    • Create and implement a plan for the diversification of funding types, such as expanding our non-U.S. supporter base, competing for more multilateral funding opportunities, and/or accelerating grassroots giving. 
    • Ensure the mobilization of virtual and in-person fundraising activities, including by leading the biannual Audacious Community calls and other development cultivation and stewardship opportunities. 
    • Communicate regularly with the Executive Vice President, appropriate Executive Leadership Team members, and the Senior Director, Global Planning and Strategic Resourcing to understand potential programmatic funding needs, then work with others on the Development team to identify and pursue funding opportunities to meet those needs.
    • With the support of the Development Operations team, provide regular analysis and reporting on the overall performance of fundraising against goals and Annual Plan.
    • Actively manage the Development departmental budget, bringing risks and opportunities to the attention of the EVP, External Relations and Chief of Staff.
    • In collaboration with the Senior Director of Communications, devise and implement compelling and consistent external messaging, and build consistent and recognizable identity to further IRAP’s brand and enhance visibility.
    • Identify, develop, and mentor the Development team, and foster a team culture of accountability, collaboration, honesty, respect, and joy.
    • Indirectly manage a team of Development professionals who are members of the union.
    • Together with the Development team, advance DEIAB efforts in fundraising, including elevating client and partner voices, and supporting Development’s role in the achievement of organization-wide DEIAB goals.

Qualifications

    • Education
    • Bachelor’s degree required.

    • Experience
    • At least ten years of professional experience in a mission-driven, nonprofit organization.
    • Demonstrated success in a Development function/role/position (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources).
    • Five years of management or supervisory experience required; supervisory experience in a unionized environment preferred.
    • Experience in building a dynamic and effective fundraising program, designed to grow with time and the expanding needs of the organization.
    • Experience working with Salesforce, Raiser’s Edge or other CRM database management systems is a plus.

Location

The candidate will work in one of IRAP’s U.S. offices in New York City or Washington, DC, but remote work candidates will be considered. The position must be able to work within EST work hours, +/- two hours, to facilitate team collaboration.

Job-related Requirements

This position does not require regular office presence.
This position requires the ability to travel (approximately six times per year, including possible international travel), occasional work outside daytime business hours to meet with supporters and participate in cultivation opportunities, and represent IRAP at external events/meetings as and when required.

Compensation

IRAP strives for equity and transparency in its compensation practices. Compensation is based on experience, education, and internal equity. The salary for this role is in a range based on market data and will be between $158,772 - $180,071.
