Quantum Physicist – System Modeling & Operation Optimization | 1046

US Broomfield, CO
Science & Technology – Quantum Computing Hardware /
On-site

We are seeking a Quantum Physicist – System Modeling & Operation Optimization in our Broomfield, CO location to improve the operation and performance of next-generation QCCD trapped-ion quantum computers. Embedded within the system integration team, this physicist will combine a strong theoretical foundation in atomic physics and quantum computing with a practical understanding of experimental hardware. They will work daily with engineers, scientists, and system operators to interpret experimental data, develop and validate physical models, and translate their analysis into improvements in quantum operations. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with theoretical models, numerical simulation, and experimental analysis in the context quantum computer operations. They will use that knowledge to optimize device operations, diagnose performance limitations, and guide hardware and control decisions. Success in this role means turning physical insight into measurable improvements in fidelity, reliability, and throughput.

All applicants for placement in safety-sensitive positions will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug test.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and validate theoretical and numerical models of trapped-ion quantum operations, including laser–ion interactions, motional dynamics, and sources of error and decoherence.
  • Analyze experimental data to identify performance limitations, test physical explanations, and recommend improvements to operating parameters, device control sequences, and calibration routines.
  • Collaborate with system operators and engineers to design targeted experiments, interpret results, and implement and verify improvements on the hardware.
  • Develop and maintain operation error models grounded in measured system behavior, identifying the dominant contributions and prioritizing opportunities for improvement.
  • Perform analyses and design trade studies to inform hardware specifications, control approaches, and concepts of operation for future quantum computers.
  • Build reusable modeling, analysis, and automation software, and communicate findings through actionable recommendations, technical documentation, presentations, and publications.

YOU MUST HAVE:

  • PhD in physics or a closely related field, completed prior to the start date.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience, including PhD research, in atomic physics, quantum computing, quantum information, or closely related fields.
  • Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Person defined as a U.S. citizen, permanent resident or green card holder, or worker granted asylum or refugee status.
  • Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.

WE VALUE:

  • Strong foundation in the theory of atomic systems and coherent quantum control, with experience applying that knowledge to experimentally realized qubit systems.
  • Deep understanding of trapped-ion quantum computing, particularly QCCD architectures and laser cooling.
  • Strong scientific programming skills and experience developing software for modeling and data analysis.
  • Experience collaborating closely with experimental scientists or engineers to translate theoretical analysis into practical changes in hardware operation.
  • Experience modeling and mitigating experimental effects such as laser noise, drift, crosstalk, motional heating, and calibration errors.
  • Experience benchmarking qubit operations and connecting measured performance to physical error mechanisms.
  • Familiarity with experimental control systems, automated calibration, and the practical constraints of operating complex quantum hardware.
  • Ability to work independently on open-ended problems and prioritize analysis based on its potential impact on system performance.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain physical mechanisms and recommendations to multidisciplinary teams, with published results in their field.
