We are seeking an exceptional Manager – Photonics Metrology Lab in our Albuquerque, NM location to lead a group of optics/photonics engineers and AMO physicists in their cross-disciplinary efforts to empirically characterize next-generation optics and photonics solutions for trapped-ion quantum computers. This position involves direct supervision of front-line technical individual contributors, and may also involve hands-on duties in the laboratory where appropriate. The role also involves planning, designing, and overseeing the buildup of multiple phases of new lab space and capabilities. Technical capabilities addressed by this team include testbeds for integrated photonics component characterization at room temperature, and in-situ ion trapping systems designed to deliver data on the performance of photonic components co-integrated with ion traps. The successful candidate in this role will work closely with a parallel lab team in Broomfield, CO deployed to similar topics, as well as optics/photonics design teams in both Albuquerque and Broomfield. This role will report to the Director of Photonics.
Key Responsibilities:
- Accountable for designing, planning, and execution of multiple phases of new lab space for trapped-ion optics/photonics component characterization
- Accountable for identifying technological gaps between the state of the art available and the performance and functionality needed by the company’s photonics characterization capabilities
- Identify looming needs for growth in measurement capabilities and staff resources
- Directly supervise a growing team of physicists, engineers, and technicians in day-to-day operations and technical work
- Instill a culture of excellence in scientific and engineering practices
- Translate technical needs from the business into laboratory capabilities, and execute on their delivery
- Recruit and hire staff
- Contribute technically to the overall development of optical and photonic solutions for next-generation trapped ion quantum computers
- Seek out and manage external partnerships with academic institutions, national labs, government, vendors, and suppliers
YOU MUST HAVE:
- PhD minimum
- Minimum 5+ years post-degree combined experience working in experimental quantum sciences in academic, industrial, or national lab setting
- Minimum 2+ years of combined experience in management role
- Due to Contractual requirements, must be a U.S. Person defined as, U.S. citizen permanent resident or green card holder, workers granted asylum or refugee status
- Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen.
WE VALUE:
- PhD minimum in atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics preferred
- Deep experience in atom/ion trapping, quantum optics, and/or integrated photonics
- Recent experience (within last 2 years) with cutting-edge AMO physics experiments
- Extensive experience with high-performance laser systems in the visible/UV and NIR
- Recent experience (within last 2 years) with cryogenic and vacuum systems
- Experience working closely with teams in different geographic locations
- Proven expertise in quantum computing or closely related topics
- Experience in complex task management (cost, schedule, risk/opportunity, etc.)
- Strong organizational & leadership skills; Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A calm temperament that keeps the conversation productive even in times of pressure and change
- Cross-functional mentality: commitment to empowering and enabling all organizations within the business
- Strategic thinking: aptitude for aligning tactical activities with strategic business objectives
- Programmatic acumen: experience creating, driving, and tracking complex project plans
$200,000 - $250,000 a year
Compensation & Benefits:
Incentive eligible – Range posted is inclusive of bonus target
The pay range for this role is $200,000 – $250,000 annually. Actual compensation within this range may vary based on the candidate’s skills, educational background, professional experience, and unique qualifications for the role.
