We are seeking a highly-qualified Hardware Researcher to join our team launching, maintaining, developing, and operating an on-premises Helios quantum computer at a customer site. Helios is our next-generation quantum computer with 98 physical qubits and error rates <10-3. This will be our second Hardware-as-a-Service offering following our installation of a quantum computer at RIKEN’s Wako, Japan campus. The ideal candidate will have a broad and deep understanding of quantum computing, atomic physics, and/or technical operations and experience operating a quantum computer or similarly complex system or apparatus as part of a small team with global support.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Launch, maintain, develop, and operate the on-premises Helios quantum computer as part of a small team
- Oversight and responsibility for specific subsystems, e.g. laser, and functional capabilities, e.g. ion transport
- Conceptualize and execute operation and development plans
- Remotely operate and maintain cloud-based H-series quantum computers as a part of a global team
- Mentor and train junior team members in technical and operational matters
YOU MUST HAVE
- Ph.D. (Physics, Engineering, Computer Science or related technical field preferred)
- Minimum of 5 years of post-graduate experience (M.S. or Ph.D. inclusive)
- Ability to read, write, and verbally communicate technical topics in English
- Ability to travel abroad for training or other business needs
- Due to national security requirements imposed by the U.S. Government, candidates for this position must not be a People's Republic of China national or Russian national unless the candidate is also a U.S. citizen
WE VALUE
- Proven hardware expertise in atomic physics systems, superconducting qubits, or other quantum computing platforms
- Experience with lasers, laser cooling, atom trapping, cryogenics, ultra-high vacuum systems, analog and digital electronics, laboratory hardware control, Python, physical modeling, and data analysis
- A track record of high-technology (engineering or physical sciences) research and development, demonstrated by scholarly publications or granted patents
- A background in international and/or remote collaboration and projects
- Strong organizational & leadership skills; Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A strong and active network of professional relationships
