We are seeking a highly qualified R&D Manager - Commercial Quantum Computing to lead a physics team building, testing, upgrading, and operating commercial quantum computers for our new lab in metro-Tokyo area in development.. The manager in this position will lead and mentor a group of atomic/molecular/optical (AMO) physicists, technicians, and engineers. This role comprises individual technical contribution, technical leadership, and people-management, in roughly equal parts.  As such, candidates will boast a broad and deep understanding in quantum computing or atomic/molecular/optical (AMO) physics. 
 

Key Responsibilities

    • Lead a team of scientists, engineers, and technicians who operate, maintain, and upgrade commercial quantum computers
    • Collaborate with an international team of scientist and engineers in the development and testing of new quantum computing hardware and algorithms
    • Perform and guide efforts in conceptualizing, developing, designing, assembling, and validating advanced quantum computers and their component systems
    • Perform technical goal setting, engineering performance assessments and compensation adjustments
    • Apply technical experience in QC and/or AMO physics to mentor & aid technical staff
    • Meet project objectives by hiring and developing staff with the right skills for success
    • Partner with technical leadership to provide staffing resources, training and career development
    • Lead technical teams to meet programmatic performance, schedule, cost, and quality commitments
    • Plan and nurture career development of direct-reporting engineer/scientists
    • Mentor, coach, and train direct-reporting engineer/scientists
    • Co-own, with other relevant stakeholders, the QC/AMO technology portfolio, including IP development and capture, commodity liaising with procurement, and long-term development strategy and roadmap

Requirement

    • Ph.D in Physics, Engineering, Computer Science or related technical field preferred
    • 7 or more years of post-graduate experience (MS or PhD inclusive) developing atomic/molecular/optical (AMO) /or QC systems
    • Minimum 1 year of experience serving as the leader of an advanced technical team (either task leadership or personnel management, or both)
    • Proven expertise in AMO physics and/or Quantum Computing
    • Experience in complex task management (cost, schedule, risk/opportunity, etc)
    • A track record of high-technology (engineering, or physical science) development
    • Work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in Japan.
    • Ability to read, write, and verbally communicate technical topics in both English and Japanese 
    • Valid authorization to work in Japan, such as Research visa, Japan citizenship, etc.
