Research Software Engineer - Quantum Software

We are hiring a Research Software Engineer to join our Cambridge-based Quantum Software team. As a member of our Quantum Software R&D team, you will focus on optimising quantum circuits. Your responsibilities will include developing software for compiling quantum circuits and designing and implementing algorithm-specific quantum circuit constructions. You will have the freedom to think independently and creatively within the team, making a real impact. Your work will be motivated by the requirements of application-focused research groups, and your contributions will be integrated into our quantum software ecosystem, including TKET, our quantum compiler, and used by quantum programmers around the world. 

Responsibilities:

    • Develop high-quality software in various programming languages, potentially including Python, C++, and Rust. 
    • Contribute to TKET, our quantum compiler, as well as other software packages within our quantum software ecosystem. 
    • Conduct original research in quantum computing, with a focus on quantum circuit optimisation 
    • Stay informed about the latest research in quantum circuit design and compilation, sharing key ideas with colleagues. 

Key Requirements:

    • Have experience programming, ideally in Python, C++, or Rust. 
    • Be willing to learn new programming languages. 
    • Be an independent worker capable of understanding technical and advanced research material and transferring new ideas into code. 
    • Be able to present and discussnew research ideas in a collaborative environment. 
    • Hold a master's degree or PhD in Mathematics, Physics, or Computer Science. 

Desirable Skills:

    • Strong knowledge of quantum circuit design and compilation, including Fault Tolerant circuits. 
    • Published research in the field of quantum computing. 
    • Experience with quantum software kits such as TKET and Qiskit, either as a user or contributor. 
    • Experience ofsoftware development in a commercial environment, using version control, issue trackers and similar tools.
