The main purpose of this role is in leading the Microscopy R&D function at ONI, responsible for delivering on hardware early stage research and development, and supporting the transfer of designs into manufacturing.

Your Role at ONI:

    • Owning the execution of ONI’s hardware strategy, devised in collaboration with the rest of the management team.
    • Aligning their team on the hardware strategy and overall company goals, and executing and delivering on the product roadmap
    • Designing and implementing improvements on existing hardware products with a regular cadence, in line with commercial strategy, collaborating with manufacturing to troubleshoot hardware related problems that pose a risk to manufacturing throughput.
    • Leading the conceptualization, prototyping and development of new hardware products in alignment with overall commercial strategy.
    • Developing targets and KPIs to drive a high-performance culture within the function, as well as proactive performance and talent management of the people within your team.
    • Direct management of the Oxford Hardware team.
    • Headcount planning and recruitment including making budget submissions and proposals, reviewing conflicting requirements and requests, agreeing where investments and adjustments might be needed.
    • Ensuring that the annual appraisals are conducted, and quality feedback is given on career development needs, having an overview of performance across the whole group and encouraging actions to develop talent, deal with any performance concerns and recognise top performers.
    • Building the annual remuneration review recommendations and budgets and ensuring fairness and consistency across the Company and group during the annual remuneration review process.
    • Proactively identifying and anticipating future skills gaps and succession planning, ensuring the appropriate mix of skills and experience amongst employees for the long term, addressing shortfalls through recruitment and training.
    • Championing opportunities for improvement, understanding possible impact and benefits on other groups and seeking buy-in from the leadership team.

Essential skills and Qualifications:

    • Designed, developed and launched commercially successful mechanical and/or optical systems
    • Led multidisciplinary teams of scientists, and engineers, capable of delivering complex  products of optical, mechanical, and electronic aspects.
    • Delivered product improvements for functionality and customer experience and reduce production costs
    • Managed a team of engineers to deliver complex technical projects through prototype to commercial launch.
    • Presented and delivered on product strategies based on data and priorities
    • Presented technical achievements, challenges, and strategic changes to management and executive teams
    • Strategic planning, devising a hardware product roadmap based on commercial strategy
    • Advanced Degree in Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Bioengineering

Desired skills and Qualifications:

    • Systems design for life sciences analytic tools, including optical systems
    • Has used a wide range of life science tools (microscopy, sequencing, flow cytometry, etc)
    • Optical product design for microscopy
    • PhD in a project involving photonics, spectroscopy, or microscopy.
