InstaDeep is looking for the best of the best across all of Africa to help us build a brighter and more equitable future of advanced AI for personalised healthcare. In particular, we are looking for a Research Scientist for our research team in Kigali, working at the intersection of decision-making, generative modeling and life sciences. We are building the next generation of generative AI technologies and your role will be to help us research the best ways we can ensure that these systems are safe and aligned to a more diverse collective of human preferences.

As a Research Scientist, you will have the opportunity to work at the intersection of decision-making, generative modeling, and life sciences, contributing to the development of next-generation AI technologies for personalized healthcare.


The Research Scientist must Accomplish the following:

    • Work within a team of researchers and engineers on an impactful AI research agenda in collaboration and with support from senior researchers.
    • Implement and develop novel algorithms and research ideas in generative modelling, reinforcement learning, AI safety, computational biology and related fields.
    • Track ongoing developments in machine learning methods for biology.
    • Contribute to our publication efforts.
    • Encourage and support good research practices as ideas are translated into projects.
    • Design and implement algorithms to leverage modern hardware, such as parallelisation across GPUs/TPUs.
    • Report and present experimental results and research findings clearly and efficiently, both internally and externally, verbally and in writing. 
    • From time to time, collaborate with the business development team in their pre-sales activities, including presenting the company to prospective clients and representing InstaDeep at conferences/events.  

Who you are:

    • Experience leading a team in settings requiring complex problem-solving, effective teamwork and skilful project management.
    • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Computational Biology, Machine Learning or a related scientific field or equivalent industry experience. 
    • Extensive experience with both sequence-based models such as large language models and reinforcement learning.
    • Experience in developing and debugging in Python or similar languages.
    • Experience using deep learning frameworks such as Jax, PyTorch and/or Tensorflow.
    • Proven ability to contribute to research at the highest level by publishing scientific papers in top academic venues and/or workshops in domains related to Artificial Intelligence and/or BioInformatics.
