Position Summary
The Captain has overall command of the vessel.
The Captain takes rank and precedence over all officers. Their primary responsibility must always be the safe navigation and conduct of the ship. In addition, they are responsible for the overall operation of the ship and for ensuring that officers in all departments effectively perform their duties. It follows that all seafarers are, in every respect, subject to the Captain’s orders.
The Captain serves as the overall Master and highest authority onboard, accountable for the safe operation, navigation, and management of the vessel while upholding Aman at Sea’s ultra-luxury service standards. This role combines maritime expertise with refined leadership, representing the pinnacle of hospitality, discretion, and guest experience. The captain will ensure flawless safety, seamless operations, and an exceptional onboard culture. In alignment with the AMAN AT SEA values.
The Captain, by virtue of their authority, which by law and customs they exercise, bears an unusual responsibility. Whilst in command, they cannot delegate their ultimate responsibility.
Key Responsibilities.
The Captain is responsible for:
- The occupational health, safety and welfare of the crew, and the safety of passengers;
- Ensuring that all Officers and Crew are familiar with the Company's Management System;
- Motivating the Crew in executing their duties according to the Company's Management System;
- Ensuring that a robust Safety & Health culture and Environmental and Energy Efficiency awareness is encouraged and maintained;
- Ensuring that activities are well planned, organized and safeguards established against all identified risks;
- Issuing appropriate orders and instructions in a clear and simple manner and verify that specified requirements are observed;
- Ensuring that corrective and preventive actions are implemented timely and effectively;
- Reporting occurrences that could either directly or indirectly lead to an adverse effect on Quality, Safety, Health, Environment & Energy, Security operational capability or reliability;
- Reviewing the Company’s Management System on a regular basis and reporting to the Company their proposals for improvement.
- Ensuring crewmembers’ compliance with the requirements of the Company’s Management System, MARPOL, Ballast Water Management and all applicable maritime pollution prevention requirements, including EPA’s Vessel General Permit (VGP) requirements whilst in US waters;
- Ensuring crew members’ compliance with environmental & energy requirements is indicated in the performance evaluations as a positive factor and failure to comply with those is documented as a negative factor, and may lead to dismissal or no reemployment;
- Ensuring that all environmental Machinery Space Operation Procedures are fully implemented on board;
- Ensuring that Oil and Garbage Record Books are maintained properly, records are made by the officer in charge, countersigned by the Environmental & Energy Officer, Staff Captain and Chief Engineer as applicable and reviewed by the Captain;
- Ensuring the use of, and personally review, handover notes for the Captain, Staff Captain, Safety Officer, Chief Engineer, Environmental & Energy Officer. All handover notes to include a descriptive environmental compliance component and the information related to the status of handling and discharge of any vessel
generated wastes and the operation of the Oily Water Separator, Oil Content Meter and Incinerator; - Maintaining all records required by international conventions and treaties including SOLAS, the ISM Code, MARPOL, applicable U.S. State and Federal statutes and regulations, and any additional documents or records required under the Company’s Management System on board, for the period specified by the vessel’s Flag Administration or the relevant law.
- Portraying a positive image of AMAN values to all guests, officers, crew, and government officials;
- Maintaining professional relationships across all functions, while promoting a positive and harassment-free work environment that welcomes and respects differences in cultures, backgrounds, and individual personalities;
- Participating in emergency drills and responding to actual emergencies as per the Muster List;
- Performing duties and tasks according to above but not limited to that.
Captain overriding Authority
- It is acknowledged by all shore-based personnel that in matters of safety and pollution prevention, the Captain has the overriding authority and responsibility to take whatever action he considers to be in the best interest of the passengers and the crew, the ship and the environment.
- The Shipboard Manuals provided by the Company do not detract the Captain from his authority or responsibilities or his duty to issue orders and instructions. The Captain can and indeed must depart from the Company system if particular circumstances require him to do so.
- In exercising his overriding authority properly, the Captain shall not be unjustifiably dismissed or otherwise penalized and shall receive the protection of the relevant legislation of the Flag State of his ship, including the right to appeal.
Qualifications
- Certification in accordance with the latest Qualification Requirements Matrix GOATT
- Captain Mariner (Unlimited) . with valid national certification and STCW endorsements mandated by international standards
- Minimum 10 years command experience on small luxury cruise, boutique super yacht-cruise, or expedition vessels.
- Demonstrated expertise in safety management, crew leadership, and guest relations at the highest levels of discretion.
- Proven experience leading multinational crews, fostering an inclusive and high-performing team environment.
- Strong familiarity with small-port operations, tender logistics, and guest transfers in remote destinations.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience conducting and supervising helicopter operations aboard of luxury vessels, including HLO/HDA coordination and protocols.
- Fluent English required; additional languages beneficial.

Physical requirements.
- Able to work 7 days a week for an extended period of time.
- While performing the essential functions of this job, all team members are required to stand; walk long distances on the ship; use hands to touch, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk, hear, taste and smell. All vessel positions require repetitive motion of bending, climbing, going up and down stairs and lifting up to 23 kilograms.
- This job requires specific vision abilities to include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
- All team members must be physically able to participate in emergency lifesaving procedures and drills. All vessel positions require full use and range of arms and legs as well as full visual, verbal and hearing abilities to receive and give instructions in the event of an emergency including the lowering of lifeboats.
- Assist with zodiac landings, Marina days and Expeditions when required.
- Work within different temperature changes—indoors to outdoors.
- Able to pass basic safety course.
