CHIEF ENGINEER
Position Summary
Aman at Sea is seeking an exceptional Staff Captain to serve as a senior leader and Aman brand ambassador aboard Amangati. The Staff Captain is one of the defining faces of the Aman experience at sea — embodying the values of calm authority, genuine warmth, and quiet excellence that set Aman apart. This role demands a respected maritime professional with strong leadership, sound operational judgement, and a proven track record aboard small luxury vessels, who is equally at ease navigating a bridge watch and hosting guests with understated grace. The position is committed to upholding the exacting standards Aman guests expect, not only in safety and seamanship, but in every human interaction aboard.
The position will initially begin in the shipyard in Genoa, Italy, where the Staff Captain will play a pivotal role in supporting the vessel’s build, commissioning, inspections, and overall operational readiness. This phase requires close collaboration with the shipyard, technical teams, and shoreside leadership to ensure Amangati is prepared to the highest standards before her first guests step aboard. Following delivery, the role transitions to full operational service, providing continuity of leadership and the consistent expression of Aman’s values as the yacht enters service.
Key Responsibilities
• Act as deputy to the Captain, maintaining full familiarity with vessel navigation, command responsibilities, and overall operational readiness.
• During the shipyard phase, partner closely with the shipyard and site teams in Genoa, Italy, supporting construction oversight, commissioning activities, inspections, and operational readiness as the vessel progresses toward delivery.
• Lead the Deck Department, ensuring all officers and crew operate in accordance with the Company’s Management System and the highest professional standards.
• Promote a strong culture of safety, environmental stewardship, and operational excellence as Chair of the Health, Safety, Environment & Energy (HSE) Committee.
• Oversee voyage planning, vessel loading, and stability management to ensure compliance with Load Line, stress, stability, and all operational limitations.
• Coordinate closely with the Engineering Department on bunkering, ballast, freshwater production, wastewater management, and other critical operational activities.
• Supervise the maintenance, cleanliness, and presentation of all external areas of the vessel, ensuring deck machinery, equipment, and technical spaces are maintained to the highest standards.
• Oversee potable water management and the safe operation of recreational water facilities in accordance with the vessel’s Water Safety Plan.
• Coordinate helicopter operations, ensuring helideck readiness and adherence to all safety procedures.
• Maintain close collaboration with all department heads to ensure seamless vessel operations and an exceptional onboard environment.
• Serve as a visible Aman brand ambassador, engaging guests with the warmth, discretion, and genuine curiosity that defines the Aman ethos — understanding that in this role, as with the Captain, Safety Officer, and Chief Engineer, every interaction is an expression of the brand. Create moments of authentic connection that reflect Aman’s philosophy of peace, space, and unhurried luxury.
• Support the Captain in maintaining onboard discipline, promoting crew welfare, and ensuring adherence to the Company’s Code of Conduct.
Experience
• Minimum of 5–7 years’ experience serving as a Staff Captain on luxury cruise vessels.
• Demonstrated progression through the deck officer ranks, reflecting strong seamanship, leadership development, and a deep understanding of vessel operations.
• Proven leadership experience managing deck teams and collaborating effectively with cross-functional shipboard departments.
• Impeccable safety record with a strong commitment to maritime safety, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.
• Experience aboard smaller luxury vessels or expedition-style ships is highly desirable; a genuine understanding of what ultra-luxury hospitality feels like — as a guest, not just an operator — is a meaningful advantage.
• Experience participating in shipyard newbuild, commissioning, or dry dock projects is considered a strong advantage.
• Strong operational experience with tender and helicopter operations, including planning, coordination, and safety oversight.
• Strong knowledge of international maritime regulations, including SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM, ISPS, and other applicable standards.
• Demonstrated ability to operate as a brand representative in an ultra-luxury environment, balancing operational excellence with the refined guest expectations of an Aman clientele; comfortable as a public face of the vessel, hosting and engaging guests alongside the Captain and other senior officers.
• Exceptional leadership presence with the ability to inspire, mentor, and develop officers and crew while maintaining a culture of professionalism and accountability.
• Exemplary discretion, diplomacy, and emotional intelligence when interacting with Aman guests, senior leadership, and external stakeholders; an intuitive understanding of the codes of ultra-luxury hospitality and an innate ability to embody the Aman spirit in every encounter.
