Position Summary
This position will work collaboratively with all leaders, departments and the shop. The Structural Designer will be required to be driven, motivated and responsible for completing complex structural steel designs and drawings for fabrication, including steel fabrication, welded and bolted connections, and concrete foundations.
The Structural Designer is expected to make independent decisions and adhere to company standards and procedures. The role will be familiar with the terminology and practices of the industry and must use them accurately in the preparation of designs and drawings.
The duties listed below are the essential functions and not an exhaustive list, tasks are subject to change in accordance with business requirements.
Job Duties
- Take a concept, create General Arrangement Drawing (GA), once approved, design and draw it, communicate and ensure electronic files are current in both Vault & Google Drive
- Participates in design reviews to evaluate design concepts and make recommendations
- Create shop drawings, communicating with the shop and project team members
- Adhering to current processes/templates and committing to ongoing development & improvement
- Creating and implementing processes for the design department, including training colleagues on the new processes
- Analyze and improve existing processes with a sharp eye for detail and “can do” attitude
- Custom fabrication and design, including changes to drawings and design & post completion revisions/feedback
- Material take off and generation of bill of materials
- Assist with rolling out drawings to production and support the project through the fabrication process
- Drawing quality control
- Create quotes (including custom quotes) using spreadsheets
- Monitor budgeted materials and labour hours throughout the process to ensure profit
- Learn, understand, and operate Messer plasma cutter and OMNIWIN software
- Collaborating with Plasma Operator – improving cut quality, speed, efficiency and utilizing programs potential and unused capabilities
- Ensure customer correspondence is handled in a timely manner (via email, phone call etc.)
- Maintain tight deadlines by working efficiently
- Communicate regularly with the office team, ensuring details of changes are communicated promptly
- Ensure costing, quoting, and purchasing is accurate in order to achieve consistency
- Purchasing materials, namely steel
- Site measuring where required, ensuring project team is frequently updated on changes
- Revises drawings as needed to correct details and reflect actual versus planned project feature locations and dimensions
- Supports Site Design requests and provides prompt responses.
- Develops innovative and creative structural design solutions (layout plans, sections, and details) to resolve various structural design challenges adding value to the company’s complex mining projects
- Works to develop preliminary and final designs
- Details structural elements
- Help resolve computer tech issues – and keep up programming up to date & current versions (inventor, Auto Cad, OMNIWIN)
- Ensure department KPI’s are met
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment, with the ability to set priorities
- Ability to plan and layout drawings without supervision
- Experience with Solidworks
- Proficiency in Inventor
- Ability to create shop drawings from hand sketches
- Familiarity with building and safety codes
- Solid time management and ability to follow current established data storage processes
- Keen eye for detail
- Strong communicator, able to explain and support their ideas
- Proficient planning and organizational skills
- Ability to function with minimal supervision
$70,000 - $80,000 a year
