About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our maintenance team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining a variety of heavy equipment used in our sand and gravel operations, using both traditional tools and modern computer-based diagnostic systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic issues on heavy equipment such as: Wheel loaders, excavators, dozers, skid steers
- Haul trucks and on-road trucks (if applicable)
- Screens, crushers, conveyors, and plant equipment
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance according to schedule.
- Use computer-based diagnostic software and OEM programs to troubleshoot and repair equipment.
- Connect laptops/diagnostic tools to equipment ECMs to retrieve fault codes and perform calibrations.
- Conduct inspections, identify potential problems, and recommend corrective actions.
- Use diagnostic tools, service manuals, technical documentation, and online OEM resources.
- Maintain accurate electronic and/or paper maintenance and repair records.
- Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards.
- Communicate repair needs, parts requirements, and equipment status to supervisors.
- Keep work areas clean, organized, and in compliance with safety regulations.
Skills & Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- 3+ years of experience as a heavy equipment mechanic (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, and drivetrains.
- Basic computer skills, including: Using laptops with diagnostic software to read and clear codes, navigating OEM diagnostic programs and service portals, entering work orders and notes into maintenance software (or willingness to learn)
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and parts diagrams.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and diagnostic equipment.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Ability to lift up to 50lbs and work in outdoor/industrial environments.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills (mechanical and computer-based).
- Ability to learn and adapt to new diagnostic technologies and software.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality work.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication and documentation skills.
- Strong commitment to safety and following procedures.
Preferred:
- Experience in sand & gravel, mining, or construction materials industry.
- CDL license (Class A or B) is a plus.
- Welding and fabrication experience.
- OEM or trade school training/certification in heavy equipment or diesel technology.
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
$75,000 - $90,000 a year
Based on experience.
Working Conditions
· Outdoor work in varying weather conditions
· Exposure to noise, dust, and heavy equipment
· May require extended hours during peak production periods
